Skylanders Trap Team™ will reverse the magic of bringing toys to life.

Skylanders Trap Team

I’m not sure any family of 5-10 year olds has managed to avoid the phenomena that is Skylanders. Three years ago, Activision brought merchandising to life by creating a game with real action figures that you could pop on a portal and see them appear as playable characters on the screen. The technology to parents is simply magic, to kids it is just the way it is and now simply expected as the norm.

We have had further iterations form the original Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure: Skylanders Giants and also Skylanders Swap Force developed the characters further. Swap Force  let you swap the tops and bottoms to create some great variations of the little critters for use in the game.

Activision created a way of turning a £40 game purchase into an ongoing investment in game play characters. Disney quickly followed suit with their Infinity game, using characters from their films but Activision invented the genre and look set to continue the innovation this year.

So what next? Well Activision has announced that in October 2014, Skylanders Trap Team™ will reverse the magic of bringing toys to life by letting players capture villains and play as them using Traps that bring life to toys with the new Traptanium Portal.

In practice this means that as well as putting characters on the portal and have them appear in the game, players can also catch and trap other characters and bring them out of the game and into the Traptanium Portal. The characters then chatter away to the gamer and can be stored in crystals that connect to the Portal for use in the game as well. get ready everyone sounds like an investment in another Portal, will it be worth it?

At Gamewagon we are big proponents of social video gaming and Activision has announced that this new play pattern also gives players the option to switch between playing as a Skylander hero or a villain at any time, creating fun and unique “tag team” gameplay. In addition, fans can even take their Traps and their Skylanders characters to their friends’ houses for fun, co-operative adventures across all console game systems. We like the sound of that and look forward to seeing it in action.

More Adult Women Than Teenagers Play Video Games (ESA)

A new report titled “Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Games Industry” by the ESA  found more adult women play video games than teenagers. The report shows that women aged 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing audience (36%) than boys aged 18 or younger (17%).

We could have told them that, you should see us trying to get Mums out of the Game wagon after a video game party!

more women play video games than teenagers

The report also goes onto mention that 68% of parents with children under 18 feel games provide mental stimulation and education.

“Parents across America recognize the widespread benefits of video games, including education, mental stimulation, and the bonding opportunities they create for families,” said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of ESA. “Video games are a favorite pastime enjoyed by men and women of all ages, and millions worldwide who share their game play experiences with friends and family.”

We have long supported the close family interaction with video game usage in the family home and the report also shows that parents monitor their children’s game play. In fact, 95 percent of parents said they are paying attention to the content of the games their children play, and 91 percent are present when games are purchased.

Additionally, 88 percent of parents whose children play games believe the video game ratings are either very or somewhat helpful in choosing games for their children.

Do you know what games your kids are playing? Do you time limit gaming? Do you play with your kids and get involved? We would love to hear your comments and opinions.

Lego Hobbit – Buddy up over Easter for family fun in Middle Earth

The Hobbit Video Game Party Heaven

Grab a friend and set forth on a perilous journey far over the Misty Mountains with Thorin and company to reclaim the dwarven Kingdom of Erebor. The Lego title are fantastic parent and child adventures in co-op mode.

Never tried co-op with the Lego Titles? Give it a try you will be amazed at the problem solving and story telling that will make you both chuckle like naughty little hobbits. I have read The Hobbit to both of my kids when they were smaller and now this represents a great new way to experience the legendary adventures of Bilbo and Company.

“There is no better way for parents to share the beloved and classic tale told in The Hobbitfilms with their kids than with LEGO The Hobbit videogame, in which they can discover, explore, and build their way through Middle-earth together like never before.” said Tom Stone, Managing Director, TT Games.

We are so glad that the PEGI rating came out at 7 as it makes it an all inclusive title fo rthe whole family. Friends and family will enjoy discovering Middle-earth through the easy access drop-in, drop-out gameplay option available on the consoles. Together players will navigate 16 levels, unlock more than 90 playable characters and partake in diverse treasure quests, mine for gems, discover loot from enemies, craft powerful magical items, and collect objects as they triumph in a game of riddles and discover the power of The One Ring.

This is on our must have collection and will be putting it through it’s paces over the next week or so and keep you posted on our progress. Hopefully we can make it out of the Shire!!!

Angry Birds Stella Announced

Angry Birds has always been a firm favourite with Gamewagoners on iPad and consoles. Now, Rovio has announced a new Angry Birds brand being developed called Angry Birds Stella.
Rovio Stella

“Get ready to meet Stella and her friends! Stella may be pink, but she’s definitely one of the Angry Birds, a fierce and a feisty character with a great group of friends. Of course no story is complete without some interesting (fr)enemies! Angry Birds Stella will open a door to a part of the Angry Birds universe you’ve never seen before! There will be plenty of fun and adventure, but the bunch of passionate pals will also have to deal with some serious issues in order to protect their friendship and the environment they live in. Luckily, Stella and her friends are good at finding creative solutions!”

There’ll be games, cartoons, books, toys, and more to tell stories about Stella and her friends and (fr)enemies. The new tagline? “Best friends forever… most of the time”.

Top 20 Family Friendly Video Games – Weekending 14th December 2013

Lego Marvel Superheroes moves up in Video Game Charts

Courtesy of UKIE Games Charts Weekending 14th December 2013.

FIFA 14 just misses top spot this week by a very small margin! and remains at No 2 in this weeks video game charts.

Warner’s ‘Lego Marvel Superheroes’ moves from No 6 to No 3 and looks like it is finding it’s way into many Xmas stockings. It may also be benefiting from retailer promotions in the approach to Xmas.

Ubisoft climbs another place with ‘Just Dance 2014’ now at  No 6 and is a great title for the girls to have their own strictly themed dance off. No matter what format you have this game has become the standard and gives plenty of options to co-operate or compete.

Super Mario 3D World 60 Second Review

Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World is the latest WiiU must-have game, starring the world’s most famous gaming icon – Mario!

Following on from the success of last year’s New Super Mario Bros U, it’s a bright, colourful and wonderfully playable leap forward for a series that spans generations.

With hundreds of levels that take you from familiar green fields, to fantastic new locations like a floating carnival, everything looks better than ever thanks to the extra power of Nintendo’s Wii U console.

Presentation – Visuals, Sound and Theme

The gameplay feels updated too, sitting comfortably between the 2D of classic Mario games, and the full-blown 3D of something like Mario Galaxy or Mario 64. If you’re one of the thousands of gamers who got their introduction to Mario with the Wii, it’s a great way to ease into a deeper game world that you’ll love to explore.

And there’s plenty of exploring to be done. New power ups like the awesome catsuit or mind-boggling, multi-Mario, hidden in every nook and cranny. There’s tons of stickers, stars and coins to collect that it can seem like an impossible task for just one pint-sized plumber.

Multiplayer in the Gamewagon

Lucky then, that Super Mario 3D World supports up to four simultaneous players. You’re all bundled in together, as either Mario, Luigi, Toad or Princess Peach, working together to make it through level after level for imaginative fun.

So, who would’ve thought, with the bombastic launch of Sony, and Microsoft’s new massive consoles (with their massive price tags), we’d be talking so excitedly about a 30 year old series on a 2 year old machine? Super Mario 3D World is a pure gaming challenge for the hardcore, and the very best family gaming experience for the casual gamer.

FIFA 14 Maintains it’s position in Video Game Charts

Courtesy of UKIE Games Charts Weekending 7th December 2013

No change for a firm favourite with our Gamewagon parties for the past year FIFA. The latest version  ‘FIFA 14’  remains at No 2 in this weeks video game charts.

Warner’s ‘Lego Marvel Superheroes’ remains at No 6 and we will be reviewing this as a likely Xmas wish list item. We were slightly disappointed by lack of 4 player modes as the Lego titles maintain their 2 player “Dad and Lad” mantra.

Ubisoft climbs 2 places with ‘Just Dance 2014’ at No 7 and is a great title for the girls to have their own strictly themed dance off. No matter what format you have this game has become the standard and gives plenty of options to co-operate or compete.

As far as racing titles go we have always favoured Forza but this week Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 6’ for PS3 has made an appearance in the top 20. For motor heads it is worth a look but initial reviews are patchy so we suggest you give it a go before purchasing.

Other Xmas favourites are likely to be Skylanders Swap Force and Disney Infinity as they try to convince us all to not just buy the game but also the additional characters that make the different games come alive.

Minecraft (at No 13) is still extremely popular and the multiplayer modes of the Xbox version are a hit with the Minecraft fanatics. Those that have played iPad versions struggle a little with the learning curve but soon start crafting as they always did.

Stunning graphics and fast, furious and fun co-operative play are sure to make this a winner.

Stunning graphics and fast, furious and fun co-operative play are sure to make this a winner.

Hanging on to a place in the top 20 (despite slow WiiU console sales) is Super Mario 3D World. We have a review for this game on it’s way and we are sure that it will have a big part to play in our Gamewagon parties as the multiplayer games are fast, furious and fun.

Knack (No 18) is another recent release for the PS4 and is a great little game in the mould of the single player / two player co-operative play Lego titles. We’d have preferred a 4 player option to make it a hit in the Gamewagons but it may still be a solid choice if Santa brings a PS4 for Xmas.
